Charlottesville Leaders Hold Economic Opportunity Summit

Dec. 10, 2013

Charlottesville leaders are working to attract trade jobs to the area.

About a dozen people gathered for the economic opportunity summit at Carver Recreation Center on Tuesday morning.

Business people, public officials, and community leaders talked about ways to bring skilled jobs to Central Virginia.

"Unfortunately in this region, the greater Charlottesville region, we've been growing jobs at the sort of low wage of services, retail and service sectors. And we've been growing jobs at the high end… University, defense, technology kind of jobs,” says Charlottesville City Councilmember Dave Norris. “It's the jobs in the middle that we've been losing."

Norris said the city has lost manufacturing and construction jobs. Officials hope to reverse that trend.
