Charlottesville Police Get Budget Boost After Dashad Search

May 20, 2013

The Charlottesville Police Department has been granted a budget supplement, after spending $127,000 on a "critical investigation that required extraordinary measures."

Police spent the money searching a Henrico County landfill multiple times for evidence related to the disappearance of missing Charlottesville transgender man Dashad "Sage" Smith.

Nothing significant was found during the search.

The cost of a search was not budgeted for, so police requested funding be appropriated to supplement the operating budget and make up the costs associated with the investigation.

Charlottesville City Council voted Monday night to transfer $127,000 from the Citywide Reserve Account to the police department's operating budget.
