Charlottesville Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened early Saturday morning just steps from the Downtown Mall, ultimately leaving two men wounded.
Police responded to the 100-block of Second Street Northwest near the Elks Lodge around 1 a.m. Saturday for a report of shots fired. Police say a nearby witness saw one man shoot another at close range and then proceed to stand over the wounded man.
When officers arrived on scene, police say one officer discharged his weapon, apparently striking the alleged shooter. Officers were not injured in the incident.
Police say the investigation is continuing.
Both wounded men were taken to the University of Virginia Medical Center for their injuries. There is no update on their conditions.
