Charlottesville Residents Being Billed for Snowy Sidewalks

Feb. 18, 2014

Charlottesville residents who haven't shoveled their sidewalk are about to be billed.

People who hadn't shoveled their sidewalks by Monday, Feb. 17, received a warning telling them they had 24 hours to get them clear.

Today, the city sent out a contractor tasked with returning to those homes or businesses and cleared the snowy sidewalks.

The owner of the property will then receive a bill for that service, the cost of which depends on how much of the sidewalk needed to be shoveled.

“This isn't really about city regulations,” says Charlottesville Spokeswoman Miriam Dickler. “This is about making sure pedestrians have safe access to pedestrian routes and don't have to walk in our streets.

The average sidewalk shoveling bill could cost a homeowner around $150.
