The Charlottesville Waldorf School (CWS) has received a $5,000 grant from the Bama Works Fund, enabling CWS to purchase classroom furniture including 36 ergonomically correct chairs for the school's three orchestras and two choirs.

"Our students enjoy music classes, and these special chairs will enable them to be well-supported physically, which is important because a healthy posture sets up children to make the most of their musical gifts," said CWS orchestra teacher, Emily Rosson.

When used in choir classes, the chairs encourage good posture, allowing the spine and hips to be in the same position while the singer is sitting as they would be while the singer is standing.

All students at the Charlottesville Waldorf School begin to play musical instruments in the first grade and join one of the school's orchestras in the fifth grade, so each student will spend several years in these new chairs.

Brennan Gould, Director of Grants and Strategic Initiatives at the Charlottesville Area Community Foundation said, “The Bama Works Fund at CACF was pleased to support music education programming that will benefit students throughout their lives.”

The Dave Matthews Band created Bama Works Fund, and announced back in June that it would be awarding $376,000 to local non-profits and charitable groups.

The choir and orchestra classes at the Charlottesville Waldorf School are now outfitted with the ergonomic chairs.
