A Saturday afternoon competition in Charlottesville put young minds to the test.

Students from kindergarten through 12th grade participated in the Playing Aces chess tournament in the Newcomb Hall Ballroom at the University of Virginia. More than 50 kids competed in different age groups.

Organizers said that math teachers are using chess in their lesson plans. They say it helps with overall intelligence.

"Our focus is to try to get more chess in schools," said Nate Szejniuk, founder of Playing Aces. "There's been a lot research, a lot of advocacy about how important chess is and what it does."

The organization also reaches out into the community and helps students learn how to play chess after school.
