City Asks for Community Input on Belmont Bridge Project

November 21, 2013

City officials are once again asking for community input into the design of the Belmont Bridge in Charlottesville.

The city is hosting another planning meeting Thursday night at City Space. The goal is to discuss design options for the Belmont Bridge area.

The Belmont Bridge is in need of repair; an annual inspection of the bridge tracked the decay and weakening of the structure. The current options are either replacing the bridge, or building an underpass. Many residents have also expressed the desire for better pedestrian walk ways and bike paths along the bridge.

City officials hope Thursday's meeting will encourage collaboration between project planners and community members.

"This is going to be a legacy project. It is something that is going to define that end of town, and we want to make sure that people have every chance to participate in the design," said Charlottesville City Councilor Kristin Szakos.

The current price-tag on the Belmont Bridge project is about $14 million. Construction on the bridge won't start until state money is released for the project, which should happen by the end of 2015.

Thursday's meeting will run from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The city will collect feedback from the public until December 6. For more information about the project and how to get your voice heard, click HERE.
