City Council moved forward with one of the largest economic development projects in Downtown Charlottesville in recent decades.
Council approved a steering committee to oversee the vision for the new Market District. The Market District will provide a permanent home for the City Market, an economic and tourist draw. It will integrate City Market into the style and culture of the Downtown area. It will also include retail, commercial, residential developments.
"The whole idea is, let's bring together people who have some interest, experience, and expertise in helping us to take the next steps in making this Market District happen in Downtown Charlottesville," said Dave Norris, a Charlottesville City Council member.
Norris said Market District is located in the two lots on Water Street and is the largest undeveloped space in Downtown.
"It's a major, major project," Norris added. "We want to make sure we do it right and we want to make sure we have the right voices in the mix."
Council also approved sending three people to Austin, Texas. The Charlottesville representatives will travel along with representatives from Albemarle County, the University of Virginia, and local leaders to learn how Austin developed its entertainment scene and technology industry. Representatives will fly to Austin in February 2013.
