City Council Approves Measures for Charlottesville Public Works

April 22, 2014

Charlottesville City Council met Monday night, and unanimously voted to approve two measures to maintain public works in the city.

The $16 million bond includes funding to buy a new replacement fire engine, and improve the city's stormwater system. This is part of the city's on-going Capital Improvements Program, and funding had been previously approved by the council.

$3.09 million of the bond was also set aside for street repairs and new sidewalks. City Councilor Bob Fenwick said residents have been complaining about the pot holes that need repairing. Fenwick hopes to fix damages with lasting improvements.

"Roads are built not for one year, but for 10, 20, 30 years, and if you don't maintain them continually then you are going to have a replacement situation. So when you talk about infrastructure, I'm paying close attention because to me that's very very important," Fenwick said.

The other unanimous vote was to switch to bi-weekly recycling collection, with new larger covered bins. The new containers are on wheels, and can be moved easily by residents and collectors.

"It's going to save the city a lot of money because the operator of the vehicle can just pick them up and dump them so we don't have to have two or three men on each truck," said Fenwick.

The city says pilot programs have been running in the Greenbrier and Belmont neighborhoods with an 87 percent satisfaction rate.

Fenwick says the new covered cans are sturdy, and residents will not have to worry about leaving them in the elements, and having them overflow.
