City Council Requests Belmont Bridge Inspection

July 22, 2014

Now that Charlottesville City Council has settled on a design for a new Belmont Bridge, the next phase of the project can begin.

Councilor Dede Smith said that she wanted to know the condition of the current bridge. The last complete structural assessment of the Belmont Bridge was almost ten years ago.

Smith wants to know if they could potentially use the existing piers of the current bridge, which could cut down on cost and construction time.

"Per councils’ request, staff is contacting VDOT to see if they would have folks available to inspect the bridge to get a status report on it,” says Charlottesville Spokeswoman Miriam Dickler. “Council has also requested some recommendations for design teams."

MMM Design Group is expected to get back to council with recommendations for architects and engineers. Charlottesville City Council will then review those recommendations.
