Planning Commission to Discuss Future of Landmark Hotel

Jan. 14, 2014

Charlottesville's Planning Commission will meet tonight, and on their agenda is to determine the future of the Landmark Hotel.

The Landmark Hotel was developed as a multistory luxury hotel on the Downtown Mall, but the structure has stood incomplete for several years.

City Council wants changes made to the empty shell of a building.

Earlier this fall, city officials declared the partially build hotel a blighted property, calling it unsafe because homeless people and graffiti artists have gotten on the site.

City Council has requested the Planning Commission to make recommendations to the council about the repair or other changes to the skeletal structure.

John Dewberry, the owner of the property, gave a radio interview to the Rob Shilling Show last week, saying he has taken all the necessary steps to securing the building.

Dewberry says construction at the Landmark Hotel is on hold because he is working on a project in South Carolina.

Pending the Planning Commission's finding, the City Council can take hold of the property and either make safety and security changes so that it is no longer blight, or tear the structure down.

The Planning Commission meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14th.
