Close Attorney General Race Could Mean Recount

November 7, 2013

The man that will replace Ken Cuccinelli as Attorney General will either be Democrat Mark Herring or Republican Mark Obenshain. But based on the close race it seems more and more likely there will be a recount.

That means after a busy couple of weeks for area registrars, they are facing the likely reality that after getting all those votes counted they are probably going to have to do it again.

The boards have until Tuesday to look over their returns and submit them to the state.

Then the state board of elections plans to certify all of the returns on November 25th. If the margin is less than one half a percentage point, the state pays for the recount, and between that and one percent is paid for by the candidate.

Albemarle county registrar Jake Washburn says in a close race the recount is crucial because it ensures people trust the process.

"Everyone will wonder if everything counted just exactly right. I think just in the interest of finality but also assuring the electorate that yes, we've gone over it yet one more time.”

As of right now, it could be December before we find out Virginia's next attorney general.
