Central Virginia leaders honored National Crime Victims' Rights Week on Wednesday, with a ceremony at Darden Towe Park.
The theme of this year's week is "New Challenges, New Solutions," which highlights the ongoing efforts to provide services to all victims of crime.
Participants released biodegradable balloons to honor people in our area who have supported the cause of victims' rights, and also to honor those victims.
"We do a significant amount of training," said John Torres with the Department of Homeland Security. "So we can train all aspects of the community how to treat victims, how to recognize victims because quite frankly victims are threatened and they don't really want to come forward and identify themselves for a number of reasons."
There are more and 10,000 victims service agencies across the nation.
