Computer4Kids Hosts "Start Your Own Business" Camp

July 2, 2013

Thirteen students from the city of Charlottesville and Albemarle Co. presented business ideas that they worked on during the week-long "Start Your Own Business" camp with the Computers4Kids (C4K) organization.

Business like pet walking services, bakeries, and clothing stores were a few of the ideas presented to business professionals in the Charlottesville community.

The students were judged on their professionalism, marketing strategy, budgeting, and selling price. If the students presented successfully they receive $50 dollars for start-up funding.

"We also want them to feel confident in their own ability to do things in their own lives, so hopefully we get a couple businesses out of this," says Dolly Joseph, program director at C4K.

Rising 8th grader Ajayla Johnson created a cupcake business, with surprise fruit inside the cupcakes.

"I'm selling cupcakes and now i'm feeling good about it, I'm confident about it and I think I'll get the grant," says Johnson.

First through third places received cash bonuses of $100, $75, and $50 dollars.

"I think the hardest part of the whole thing was setting up the prices, like which would be a fair price, but at the same time wouldn't be too cheap," says camper Kimani Taliferro. "How to manage your money to keep your business going, but also keeping it well supplied, and basically giving you a better understanding of money all together, and time management."

C4K partnered with Charlottesville's Office of Economic Development to create the program. The goal is to broaden the horizons of the students involved in the C4K program.

The competition was Tuesday morning from 9 to 11am at the Charlottesville City Space Center.
