The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and General Excavation Inc. of Warrenton have begun the project to improve Route 691 (Jarmans Gap Road) in Crozet.

The $3.9 million construction contract was awarded in February 2011. The project is designed to improve safety for motorists, as well as bicyclists and pedestrians, along a 0.9-mile stretch of the road extending west from its intersection with Route 240.

Once completed, Route 691 will have 12-foot wide travel lanes, a four-foot wide bicycle lane on each side of the road, curb and gutter on both sides of the roadway and sidewalk on the northern side of Route 691.

During the summer of 2011, Route 691 will need to be closed for approximately 60 days for installation of a box culvert on Powells Creek. Detour plans will be announced in advance of the road closure.

Motorists should anticipate additional traffic delays due to lane closures throughout the project, as well as a reduction in the speed limit to 25 MPH within the work zone.

The project is slated for completion by Sept. 21, 2012.

More information can be found on the VDOT webpage dedicated to the project.

From 250 you can take either Old Trail and then turn left on Jarmans Gap or take Greenwood which runs right by Chiles and avoid Jarmans Gap completely. The construction will be done in phases and the detour onto Old Trail will only be 60 days during the summer. Two lanes of traffic will be open at the end of each days construction activiites. You may experience some slow downs or flagger delays but it should be very insignificant and should not affect your aility to get to Chiles.
