A water proposal in Fluvanna County that was passed last month was brought back up Wednesday. It appears the controversial deal with Aqua Virginia has changed.
In a late night vote, the agreement with Aqua Virginia was unexpectedly brought back up and approved on a 3-2 vote. The meeting Wednesday brought the supervisors together for the first time since the plan was passed. They decided that they would reconsider the deal all together.
Back in October, the supervisors suspended negotiations with Aqua Virginia.
Now it will be up to the new board to decide if they will move forward with the controversial plan.
The original deal provided 500,000 gallons of Aqua Virginia water each day to the Zion Crossroads area for the next twenty years, with a cost of $20 million.
"Return on investment. The Thomas Jefferson planning district did an excellent job providing us with an ROI - some of those metrics have moved so we want to go ahead and exclude some of those metrics, include others and give the public an opportunity to play with the numbers. It's one thing to have a rubric in place, it's another to start inserting p's and q's and data points.", said Shaun Kenney, Chair of Fluvanna Board of Supervisors .
Opponents of the plan feel like the county has too much debt, and they fear it could mean they will have to raise taxes.
Fans of the plan say that the growing area needs to anticipate the need in the fastest growing area of the county, and an area that could provide more commercial tax base.
