Charlottesville City Council approved a new, forgiving parking ordinance.
If you've never had parking ticket downtown before, you will get a one-time parking fee waiver on your first parking violation.
People will still receive a ticket and must appeal it for the waiver to be approve. Information will be on the ticket explaining the eligibility for the one-time-waiver.
The city estimates it will lose $20,000 a year with the change.
The city of Fredericksburg and the University of Virginia also offer the waiver. The goal of the waiver is not to deter visitors to Downtown.
Don't use that get-out-jail-free card up right away, though -- the ordinance won't go into effect for a couple months.
