There could be a few changes coming to the Charlottesville City Market. City Council is expected to hear plans that could relocate the current market that takes place in the parking lot off of Water Street in downtown Charlottesville.
On Saturdays from April to December local vendors from around Central Virginia can come out to sell their goods, but they could be moving to a different venue.
“We were looking at two different options; one was to keep it there and to make that space include more amenities, the other was to move it across the railroad tracks off Garrett Street,” says Kristin Szakos from Charlottesville City Council. “To make it only have a Saturday use may be under-utilizing that space.”
Szakos also explained that they were considering another option that would include selling the property to a private developer.
“For instance, the first floor might be two stories high and open to the air with columns on the side, leased back to the city that would be the city market,” says Szakos. “So it's out of the rain, it's very market friendly space.”
That plan would also include creating office space and apartments in the building with parking underneath that could be used during the weekdays.
One of the owners of Vintage Virginia Apples, who is also a vendor at the city market, says change could be good.
“More space and something that's a little more level and accessible would also be appealing,” says Charlotte Shelton, owner of Vintage Virginia Apples. “Also this area of downtown is growing.”
The market has been around for 40 years and it looks like there could be a change as downtown Charlottesville continues to develop.
The plans are scheduled to go in front of City Council on Monday, October 21st.
