In a unanimous vote, Charlottesville City Council prefers not to hold a special election to fill an open treasurer spot.
Former city treasurer Jennifer Brown retired on Oct. 1. She spoke at Monday night's council meeting asking councilors to appoint chief deputy treasurer Jason Vandever to finish her term, which lasts through December 2013.
The public hearing on the issue came at the request of Charlottesville Circuit Court Judge Edward Hogshire, who said he needed more information and input from the public and council regarding holding a special election or simply appointing someone to complete the term.
Among the reasons council chose not to hold the special election is the cost. The city would have had to pay at least $30,000.
The treasurer position will be on the November 2013 ballot.
