There are some anxious teachers and parents waiting to hear the details of the budget deal in Washington.

They want to know what has been set aside for pre-k education.

Pre-k education in our area has been experiencing an increase in demand, and if Title I budget cuts happen, there is a possibility they would have to cut classrooms.

The earliest this could impact students would be the year after next.

That's because Albemarle County has been planning ahead to avoid immediate cuts next year.

Albemarle already has pre-k programs in 13 of the 16 elementary schools.

There are 270 bright star students and 60 head start students.

Stony Point Elementary School teacher Mary Beth Selden says the early education is critical in the long-term success of students.

“It’s such a community in here. And we have morning meetings every morning, and they really work on being polite and how to make friends and conflict resolution with each other. That's something that you are going to build on the rest of your life."

The Head Start program is federally funded, Bright Stars is locally funded.

Once the details of the 2-year budget deal is more clear, then the county can start planning on what this will mean for these programs, and if they will be facing any cuts.
