Crews Respond to Several Accidents Following Wintry Mix

The winter weather made for some slippery roads for drivers Wednesday. Police responded to several accidents in the area.
I-64 west of Charlottesville was a busy spot for emergency crews as they worked to clear crashes from the roadways. The first calls started coming in around 5:30 a.m., about the same time the rain turned to sleet in Charlottesville.
"It started getting progressively worse to the point that it was hailing," said Raleigh, North Carolina resident Travis Kirkpatrick.
Kirkpatrick was passing through the area with his family on their way to the slopes for some skiing and a family gift exchange. That's when an out-of-control vehicle smashed into their SUV.
No one was injured in that accident, and the Kirkpatricks only saw minor damage to their vehicle.
Others weren't so lucky. Several vehicles, like one just a few miles from the scene of the Kirkpatricks' incident, overturned after sliding off the road.
Kirkpatrick said he thinks it was the slick roads that caused the driver to strike his family's vehicle and said other people traveling by car should adjust their driving to match the changing weather conditions.
"Drive slower than the speed limit," he said. "Be very careful and don't be afraid to use your hazards."
VDOT has been preparing for the wintry mix to hit central Virginia since Tuesday evening. Snow plows and salt spreaders have been out on the roads clearing the messy areas.
