Bob McDonnell begins with fifth day of testimony. Prosecutors pick up cross exam by laying out detailed outline, showing jurors several examples in February 2012 of McDonnell meeting with Jonnie Williams to discuss loan options, and then soon after, sending emails to staffers about helping Star Scientific.

McDonnell maintains he did not do anything for Star Scientific, that he didn't do for hundreds of other Virginia companies.

Prosecutors asked how many of those companies gave McDonnell $50,000 in loans and thousands in gifts. McDonnell testified none.

In order to convict Bob and Maureen McDonnell on federal corruption charges, prosecutors must prove quid pro quo, or that Jonnie Williams got something in return for the $177,000 in gifts and loans he gave the former first family.

In opening statements, prosecutors warned the jury there was no "smoking gun" in this case, but plenty of examples.

One took place in February 2012. Prosecutors showed an e-mail sent by the governor to Williams asking about a second $50,000 loan. Six minutes later, McDonnell sent an email to his policy director about wanting to talk about the securing research studies of Star Scientific's products at the University of Virginia and VCU. His aid wrote back, warning him to be careful with this issue.

The prosecution wrapped up cross-examination with a line from scriptures that McDonnell used in his inauguration speech: "To whom much is given, much will be required."
