Crozet Residents Implore County to Build New Library

October 5, 2011

Crozet residents say their western Albemarle County town is in dire need of a new library, and time is running out. Now, it's up to the Board of Supervisors to make it happen.

During a meeting Wednesday morning, supervisors were presented with a 1993 letter from the Donna Selle, Director of the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library, addressed to Thomas Loach, President of the Crozet Community Association, explaining the need for a library. (read here)

The design for a new branch on Library Avenue in downtown Crozet has already been approved and construction is underway on the parking lot adjacent to where the building will sit. However, for the past two years, all capital improvement projects have been frozen by the Board of Supervisors.

Meanwhile, Crozet residents who spoke at the meeting say the community has outgrown its current library branch, which Supervisor Duane Snow acknowledged is true. Residents asked the Board to pick up where it left off and approve funding to build the new library.

“We're still getting new residents, we're still generating new tax revenues, but we're not getting infrastructure that's been promised for two decades,” said Crozet resident Tim Tulson.

The Jefferson-Madison Regional Library administration says it will have to reduce the Crozet Library collection if steps are not taken soon to build a new building.
