People across Virginia are already taking advantage of the hurricane preparedness sales tax holiday.

Hurricane season starts Saturday, so this week, customers can stock up on items for an emergency kit before storms arrive.

Items that are available for purchase without tax include batteries, flashlights, bottled water, duct tape and first-aid kits. Some larger items like generators less than $1,000 are also tax free.

Lowe's in Albemarle County has a special display for tax-exempt items. Managers say it's an important sale to take advantage of.

"Who wouldn't want to be prepared? If something happens and you don't have what you need to protect your family, protect your home," said Timothy McKee, an assistant manager at Lowe's. "Those are the two main things -- home and family."

The tax holiday, which began last Saturday, runs through Friday.
