Dozens of people in Charlottesville and Albemarle County honored those killed in the line of duty at a special event on Monday morning.
The service hosted by the American Legion remembers those who died while serving in the military from Jamestown to the present day.
Organizers of these events say they are an important reminder to appreciate the freedoms Americans experience today.
"People need to stop and reflect," said Brain Del Vecchio, president of the All-American Honor Guard. "Our way of life has been preserved over the years by a number of Americans who have given up parts of their lives and sometimes their lives in order to preserve what we have today, what we enjoy now."
Local leaders and veterans attended the event. The Charlottesville High School band also performed.
