C'ville Electoral Board Begins Canvass

November 7, 2012

Canvassing is underway in Charlottesville to get a handle on official election results.

Charlottesville's registrar, Sheri Iachetta, said she's thrilled with voter turnout. Of the more than 33,000 registered voters in the city, more than 21,000 showed up to the polls.

Only three people showed up to vote without a proper form of ID, required by Virginia's recently enacted voter ID law. Those voters have until Friday to turn it in, in order to have their vote count.

"It is a great turnout," Iachetta said. "And you have to understand that our numbers were up over four years ago. Our percentage points are down, but we've also added 5,000 more registered voters."

The canvassing process makes sure all votes are accurate. Charlottesville's electoral board expects to have final totals by the end of the week.
