Government figures show methamphetamines production is rebounding in Virginia.

The Virginian-Pilot reported Monday that the Drug Enforcement Administration's latest numbers show authorities found 28 meth labs in Virginia in 2009. The number of labs had declined from a peak of 79 in 2004 through 2008.

The DEA attributes the increase to higher production by Mexican drug cartels and dealers figuring out how to get around restrictions on pseudoephedrine sales. The over-the-counter medicine is a key ingredient in meth and requires identification to buy in limited quantities.

The DEA says meth producers now pay people to buy pseudoephedrine for them.

Ten years ago it was the "Bloods," "Crips," and biker gangs on where running the various drug operations on the East Coast. Now it is mexikan drug cartels. Why? This is exactly why we need to enforce and FUND the Immigration Act of 1986. Pull out half of the DEA agents, work with ICE, and round up these low-lifes and ship them back to mexiko. So many problems would be solved in the gov't would only enforce these laws. And yes, I blame both Bush and Obama for this mess. Enforce the actual laws, is that so hard to do?

Requiring all those over-the-counter drugs to go behind the counter for signature was nothing but a farce from the beginning. I too have a family member who was a big time "cooker" of meth. He dealt in large quantities of product and never had to waste time getting his ingredients at the Walmart pharmacy. He had a source list of many enterprising college students and professors willing to supplement their incomes by "liberating" bulk quantities of the ingredients from their schools' inventories.

I wish them luck in tracking down these labs...as a person who had a family member do this many years ago (unknown to the family at the time) and develop an addiction to it I can speak from at least a little experience. It totally wrecks the health, the mind and the family. We ended up disowning said family member after threats to hurt and/or kill us escalated to legal action. I have plenty of reasons to hate this drug!
