The Albemarle County Police Department now has more money to keep its K-9 officers trained and fed, thanks to a donation from the Dalai Lama.
The $4,000 check was presented on Thursday. It's one of several community donations the Dalai Lama brought during his visit to Charlottesville in October. Some of the department's dogs helped with security during that visit.
Now the money will help the department keep its dogs fit.
"Each year it costs close to $2,000 per animal for their care, feeding, and training," said Chris Craytor with the Albemarle County Police Foundation. "It also creates funding for future animals because the dogs do age, and over time they do retire, like our regular two-footed officers."
The department also uses its K-9 officers to sniff out drugs and chase down suspects.
