DANVILLE, Virginia (AP)— The city of Danville will consider a resolution Thursday supporting a decades-old ban on uranium mining in Virginia.
The Danville Bee & Register (http://bit.ly/WigLkW) reports that the resolution states that none of the studies on uranium mining has accurately assessed the potential negative effects of mining and milling the radioactive ore.
Virginia Uranium Inc. has proposed mining a 119-million-pound deposit of the metal within 10 miles of Chatham. It maintains the uranium can be mined and processed safely.
Critics disagree, arguing that the environmental risks outweigh any economic benefits.
The General Assembly is expected to consider the 1982 moratorium during its upcoming session.
