State Sen. Creigh Deeds is continuing his push for mental health reforms in the current session of the Virginia General Assembly.

The senator said in a newsletter sent Saturday that he wants to prevent future tragedies, referencing the incident in November where he was stabbed by his son. Gus Deeds had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and stabbed the state senator.

Gus Deeds then committed suicide.

Among the senator's proposed legislation is reviewing the qualifications of health workers, increasing the amount of time a person may be held under an emergency protective order, and creating a digital registry of available psychiatric beds.

Deeds will open up more about the stabbing and his initiatives in a 60 Minutes interview that will air Sunday night at 7 p.m. on CBS19.
