Del. Bell Appointed to Health Task Force

Dec. 12, 2013

A local politician is working to solve problems in the way Virginia handles mental health.

A task force was created by Governor Bob McDonnell to review the state's health policies after Senator Creigh Deeds was attacked by his son last month.

Delegate Rob Bell was appointed to that task force. He and other members of the task force will come up with changes to make during the 2014 General Assembly session.

They will look at how make sure beds are available for mental health patients and other alternatives.

"We have real resources here, both at UVa. and the law school to come up with people that are considered experts in the field,” Delegate Bell said. “So we can really look at issues like, is there a capacity issue -- do we just not have enough beds? Or, do we have the beds but they're not being identified quickly enough? Or, is there something wrong with the laws that we don't have enough time allotted? Those are the kind of things I think we'll consider."

Delegate Bell is also in a working group with Delegate David Toscano to discuss ideas to help the General Assembly tackle the issue quickly when it reconvenes in January.
