Del. Bell Hands Out Citizen Lawmaker Awards

July 9, 2014

Nearly a dozen people were recognized Wednesday for their efforts in helping to pass legislation.

Delegate Rob Bell (R) handed out several Citizen Lawmaker Awards to people who came forward with law suggestions. These suggestions helped shape different bills that were passed by the General Assembly, and on July first those laws went into effect.

One of the laws suggested to Del. Bell looked at the criteria for involuntary commitment into a mental facility.

"I was concerned about the loophole in the law and I felt strongly that we needed to fix it and it always feels good when you know an error has been corrected," said Dr. Jeffrey Fracher.

"You feel like you're part of government and also wanted to effect some change regarding some things that we felt needed to be addressed," said David Barredo.

Another suggested law required circuit court to find a good reason before accepting name change applications for sex offenders.
