The view from Jefferson Davis Highway in Louisa County has been changed for the first time in nearly 75 years, as demolition began Monday on the original building of Louisa County High School.

The ninth-grade house, built in 1938, is coming down -- a victim of unrepairable damage from the earthquake in August 2011.

"We've all had a lot of memories in the high school, so in some ways it's very bittersweet," principal Tom Smith said. "We're watching a building that we spent a lot of time in being demolished, but also looking to the future. A new high school for Louisa County certainly makes things look a little brighter."

Smith has worked at the high school as a teacher and administrator for 15 years. He joins other faculty and students in watching the demolition from the high school's temporary trailers.

The damage from the earthquake proved too much for the entire building to handle.

"Everybody's kind of dealing with it in their own way, but I think everybody kind of understands that to get to where we need to be, we need to go through the demolition," Smith said.

The portion built in the 1970s that included the auditorium and the cafeteria has already been leveled. The ninth-grade house is the portion that has many sad to see it go.

"Everybody's just supporting each other as we get through this, and in a few years, we'll have a new school to move into," Smith said.

The Louisa County School Board is reviewing designs for the new school, which is expected to be completed by 2015.
