Nearly 200 people gathered in the auditorium at the Fluvanna County High School for a chance to vote for the next Democratic candidate who will go against Republican Robert Hurt in the November election.

This year's candidates included Ben Hudson and Lawrence Gaughan.

After delegates from each county and city in the 5th District voted, the ballots were counted. There were 53 votes for Hudson and 127 for Gaughan, who says something has to change in Virginia.

“We're going to put Robert Hurt to test and make him lose his job in November,” Gaughan told the crowd.

Gaughan says between now and November, he hopes to get connected to people in the 5th District so they will come out to the polls.

“If we continue not to vote that silence is not sending any message to Washington,” says Gaughan. “In fact, if it's sending any message at all its saying that it's OK for Washington to continue to do what they're doing.”

Fellow Democrats agree with Gaughan and say that they are tired of the work being done by Hurt.

“He's doesn't do anything. He asks Eric Cantor how he should vote and then he votes,” says Dolores Rogers of Scottsville. “He certainly doesn't represent the 5th District.”

They are however, pleased with their pick for the Democratic 5th District congressional seat.

“It's going to be a lot of hard work, but I think he can do it,” says Rogers.

The last democrat to win the 5th District congressional seat was Tom Perriello during the 2008 election.
