Dept. of Forestry Warn About Icy Trees

Dec. 5, 2013

There is a chance of wintry weather for Central Virginia, and local forestry officials are offering some tips for preparing your trees for a storm.

Officials from the Virginia Department of Forestry say most people don't think about the possible dangers of ice on the trees until after a storm.

They say ice can add hundreds or even thousands of pounds of weight to a tree. Also, trees that are rotting or have previous damage could be potentially hazardous. But they recommend you don't take action yourself.

"If you're looking for somebody to help remove some trees that are potentially damaging or ones that do come down on your property, we ultimately would like to recommend that you use a certified arborist,” says Fred Turck with the Dept. of Forestry. “Those are people that are specially trained, and have the property equipment and proper insurance to get the job done."

Officials say that if you have a tree near a power line to not cut if down yourself. Instead, they recommend you call the power company and report the problem.
