The Department of Homeland Security wants to use more hackers to help prevent cyber attacks on the U.S.
To facilitate this they sponsored a national competition for hackers on Virginia Tech's campus.
The competition was setup to be like a game of capture the flag, with the 'flags' buried in computer code.
The founder of the competition,Karen Evans, says that they wanted to find hackers that want to help people.
"We teach them a lot of skills but we try to balance it." says Evans. "Technically there are a lot of thing they could do...we have a major ethics discussion about what they should do"
The winners received one thousand dollar scholarships.
