The Charlottesville Derby Dames hit the floor Saturday at the Main Street Arena for their big bout against the Hard Knox Roller Girls.
Their heads were definitely in the game Saturday, but it was hard not to think about the current obstacle the team is facing.
"We need a lot of practice space, about 10,000 square feet and there's not a lot of that in Charlottesville", says Emilee Kiesel, Charlottesville Derby Dames President. "We're about to lose our space that we've been practicing in about a year and a half, two years," she says.
The team's current practice space is on the future site of the new Wegman's Shopping Center on 5th Street in Charlottesville.
So now, as they search for the new space they are asking local groups to join them in finding a communal place that benefits everyone.
"The big thing is we need a lot of space to be able to put in a track like this and direct lane so our referees can skate around and do their job as well," says Kiesel.
The Dames are holding a networking party on Thursday.
There they will discuss ideas for a new space with anyone who may be interested in partnering with them.
"We're trying to pair with other sports teams that may need a space, bike polo, lacrosse, hopefully some of those. Even other things like events and convention centers. If someone wants to hold a convention bi-annually they can come in and do something like that. We're just looking for a huge multi-purpose area," says Kiesel.
The Charlottesville Derby Dames have been a staple in the city since 2007 and they are just looking for the opportunity to continue to share the fun, competitive sport with the community for years to come.
"It's just one of those things that makes Charlottesville unique. It's a unique sport and it's a really awesome sport and I think that it provides an amazing way to stay in shape," says Kiesel.
For anyone interested in being apart of an effort to fund a new practice space or if any business or organization is interested in sharing a space, the Derby Dames are hosting their networking party on Thursday 6 o'clock at Main Street Arena in Charlottesville.
