Dick Woods Rd. Collapsed After Storm Flooding

July 12, 2013

People who live along Dick Woods Road in Albemarle Co. woke up to a surprising sight. The road flooded and collapsed after heavy rain.

The damage was caused by a busted storm pipe that tore off underneath the bridge, causing it to allow water to flow through the bridge's dirt support.

One family that lives right up the street from the bridge had major flooding in their yard and their cars were also damaged by the water. They explained, off camera, that the creek behind their house never reached the levels it did last night.

A physical therapist who was on the way to take care of an elderly patient found another gaping hole in a side street.

"The road is out and I can’t get across and I can't get a hold of her because the phone lines out too," says Tracy Delung. "But once I got here I was really surprised that it had taken out the whole road."

Also last night along Rt. 29 south, two miles south of the I-64 intersection was flooded and crews had to remove downed trees from the roads.

One family off of Sunset Ave. in Albemarle Co. was trapped in their house and asked for an emergency evacuation after their road was completely flooded.

There could still be a few roads out there that are flooded, so make sure to turn around if you see water on the road.

Dick Woods Road will remain closed until VDOT crews make repairs.
