Hurricane season officially began on June 1st, and Dominion Virginia Power has started some new initiatives for customers in the event of a storm.
After a hurricane or large storm knocks down power lines, Dominion wants to be able to get customers power back on a soon as possible.
The new wire down effect will allow Dominion to easily identify downed lines, and get the proper crews to the scene.
"Once we identify that, we mark it with a yellow ribbon, that will be Dominion's. Or an orange wire, which means it's another utility," said Dominion Construction Manager Fritz Vesey. "It helps the local facilities like VDOT to identify who to call or who to contact to open the streets up or one a residence to get it off their car."
Dominion says if you do have a downed line to stay at least 30 feet away from it, and report it. Customers can also sign up on www.dom.com for new text alerts to get updates during a major event.
