Dominion Virginia Power hosted a training session on power line safety Friday morning for members of the Charlottesville and Albemarle County fire departments. The seminar provided some jolting reminders.
“It was eye-opening,” said Richard Jones, CFD Battalion Chief. “Electricity can hurt you and it can kill. You need to be safe and careful.”
Dominion Manager of Safety & Training Mike Powers designed the training course to teach firefighters how to handle downed power lines as well as the invisible hazards of electricity.
“They come out and see how this thing works and they see some of the hidden hazards. If you see a power line down on the ground, often times people will think it's got to be de-energized or dead,” Powers explained.
From car accidents to severe weather, knowledge of downed power lines is pivotal for firefighters and first responders. “Electricity is very unpredictable, so it's training we definitely need,” Jones said of the live wire seminar. “ It keeps our firefighters safe and prevents them from getting injured or killed.”
By showing firefighters exactly how to handle downed power lines, Powers knows Albemarle and Charlottesville ladder companies now know what risks not to take. “If we come out here and save somebody from getting hurt or even killed it's invaluable.”
Dominion and the firefighters who participated in Friday's training seminar say the event was so successful they plan on holding more electrical training in the future.
If you'd like to report a downed power line, call the Dominion Virginia Power hotline at 1-866-DOM-HELP.
