Dragas Lobbying to Keep Her Job

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - The head of the University of Virginia's governing board has been meeting with lawmakers in an attempt to keep her position.

The Virginian-Pilot reports that rector Helen Dragas met this week with five senior members of the House and Senate committees charged with vetting gubernatorial appointments.

Dragas says she has been reaching out to lawmakers. She says many of them share an awareness of the challenges facing higher education.

Dragas led a failed effort by the board to oust President Teresa Sullivan in June. An accrediting body put U.Va. on warning because of how the Sullivan matter was handled.

Fairfax County Del. Tim Hugo says Dragas made a good case for her reappointment. But he's keeping an open mind.

Several other lawmakers say they'll oppose her reappointment.
