Drivers Navigate Slick Roads After Snowfall

December 24, 2012

It may have looked nice, but the winter weather caused a bit of mess Monday as drivers navigated the roads after the first snowfall of the season.

Central Virginia saw everything from rain to snow to sleet starting at 8:30 Monday morning, and drivers had to adjust while on the road. Some people said they saw some unsafe driving.

"Not using turn signals and just being a little too aggressive, moving a little too fast," said Albemarle County resident Pamela Lockhard. "And a little too much tailgating."

Police spent much of the day responding to several accidents in Albemarle County, a string of them taking place soon after the snow started falling.

The driver of a gray pick-up truck lost control of his vehicle on Monacan Trail near Red Hill Road about an hour after the snowfall began there. The driver struck the guard rail twice, flipped into the median and was ejected from his vehicle.

The morning snow and sleet seemed to turn into mostly rain later in the day.

Fluvanna County resident Javanov Barksdale was out running some last-minute errands Monday afternoon and said the unexpected winter weather put a damper on her plans.

"It stops everything. You can't go anywhere. You can't do anything," said Barksdale. "Everyone is in a hurry."

But even though many people are scurrying to get everything ready for the holiday Tuesday, police are reminding drivers to use caution and slow down when they are on slick roads.
