EXCLUSIVE: Family Members of Victim, Defendant React to Guilty Verdict in Taybronne White Murder Trial

October 7, 2013

Family members of Taybronne White wept as the court read aloud the verdict in his triple murder trial Monday night in Greene County. A jury of six men and six women found 28-year-old White guilty of first-degree murder in the death of Lisa Hwang, and guilty of two charges of second-degree murder in the deaths of Dustin Knighton and Brian Daniels.

"I didn't really know what to feel," said Derrick Knighton, the older brother of Dustin. "No matter what the verdict was, it wasn't going to matter."

Before closing arguments began Monday morning, Judge Daniel Bouton made Knighton change his shirt before the jury entered the courtroom. His homemade t-shirt had a picture of his little brother with the quote, 'Lord, protect me from my friends. I can protect myself from my enemies.'

When asked if justice had been served, Knighton said, "No, far from justice."

White's three sisters, mother, father, and several friends filed out of the courtroom in tears after the verdict was announced shortly after 8:00 p.m. "To me, this is a modern day lynching," said Alonzo Cutchin, the father of White. "I knew he wasn't going to get a fair trial here and I still maintain that. We are going to have to get him out of this jurisdiction."

Defense attorneys for White declined to comment on if they will appeal this court's decision.

Along with the three murder charges, White was found guilty of seven felonies, including burglary, attempted robbery, use of a firearm during an attempted burglary, and possession of a firearm by a felon.

"This is not fair," Cutchin said. "It's not right, it's not just."

The jury will reconvene Tuesday morning for sentence recommendation. White faces life in prison.
