Nurses at Martha Jefferson Hospital's free standing emergency room in Albemarle County had a slower day on Tuesday but they are expecting a busy day on Wednesday.
Besides people slipping on ice and falling, nurses see injuries from sled accidents ending in trees, sledding over rocks, and people jumping onto the snow like it's a pillow.
Nicole Dickinson, a registered nurse at Martha Jefferson Hospital's Free Standing Emergency Room, said, "If you're the parent of a younger child, helmets are always an option when you're going sledding down a hill. You can't see either what's underneath the snow. For the older kids, just make sure they are aware of their own limitations and not doing things that are too crazy"
Injuries can also come from shoveling snow.
Dickinson said, "Make sure you're not lifting with your back and you're lifting with your legs. You're not lifting too much, or too heavy. Ice is going to be heavier than snow but snow is heavier than what everyone else is used too as well."
It's also important to make sure everyone is bundled up and to return to the hear often to avoid hypothermia.
