RICHMOND, Virginia — A former employee of the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control has pleaded guilty to embezzling more than $239,000 from the agency.

Twenty-nine-year-old Steven Hammond of Richmond entered the plea Tuesday in federal court in Richmond.

A routine review by the agency uncovered the fraud in May 2013 and Hammond was fired.

The funds were intended for educational programs to combat underage drinking. Hammond was the agency's education coordinator.

Hammond faces up to 10 years in prison. Sentencing is set for Jan. 14.
