It's down to the wire now as Election Day approaches and Republican candidates for Charlottesville City Council Mike Farruggio and Buddy Weber are trying to get their names out to as many people as possible.
“Getting some good two party competitive elections with diversity of thought and diversity of ideas is probably the best thing to happen to the city,” says Weber.
“It's really encouraging,” says Farruggio. “It's amazing how many people are telling us that they are going to vote for a change and they are going to vote for two conservative guys.”
Both Weber and Farruggio were out canvasing along 10th and Page streets in Charlottesville on Sunday. They were going door to door with their message of change in the council.
“We're not out to slash and burn the budget, but we want a better budgeting process,” says Weber.
“We need as a community to have a better diversity voice,” says Farruggio. “In fact we've told the story already of one mayor in the past who was on city council with two Republicans and he said it was by far the best city council they've ever had, by way of process and conversation and looking at the issues.”
Farruggio and Weber are confident that they can take both seats on Charlottesville City Council, but Democrats are confident as well and are looking forward to voter turnout to help them in the polls.
The chair of the Charlottesville Democratic Committee James Nix, says, “Combined with the turnout driven by the governor's race and the strength of our candidates, we're very confident of the outcome that both will be elected on Tuesday.”
A recent endorsement made by the Daily Progress to both Republican Candidates shows that there could be a shift in the all Democratic city council.
