During a meeting with its board of directors, the Rivanna Solid Waste Authority proposed extending its current deal for another six months, meaning the RSWA will continue running the Ivy landfill until December of 2013. The current contract is set to expire in June of 2013.
Last month, at a special meeting of the RSWA, the board decided to end a contract with the company Waste Management for landfill services. The move left Albemarle County with the options to either run the landfill itself or hire a private company to run it. Charlottesville City Council backed out of the project last year. RSWA officials say the Ivy landfill will continue operating, for now.
"We expect it to stay open for business at least until the end of December," said RSWA Executive Director Tom Frederick. "And probably next January in 2014, somebody will be operating Ivy, we just don't know at this time, come next year, who is going to be the operator."
The extension will give County leaders time to compare contract proposals before making any decisions on the future of the landfill.
