Fines for Texting While Driving to Increase

April 8, 2013

New penalties for using your phone while behind the wheel are about to take effect.

April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month. In March, state lawmakers approved a law that imposes a fine of $125 on anyone caught texting while driving.

Nearly half of all teens admit to texting while driving, and roughly the same percentage of adults admit they're guilty of it too.

"When you put your eyes down and you start playing with a machine and both hands are off the wheel, or even one, you put yourself at substantial risk and other people who are on the road," said Delegate David Toscano.

Virginia's new texting and driving law goes into effect July 1, 2013.
