Dozens of firefighters from Albemarle and Nelson counties have brought a pair of wildfires under control.

The fire in Albemarle County burned about 25 acres near Spring Valley Road. It destroyed a shed, but did not damage any homes.

The fire in Nelson County burned about five acres along Taylor Creek Road. No structures were burned.

Both fires started Tuesday afternoon, and came under control by 7 p.m.

"It was so hot," said Donna Toms, who lives near the Taylor Creek Road fire. "You could just feel it just beating at you. It was almost like you were standing at a bonfire."

Toms has seen several fires in the area before, and she says the conditions on Tuesday were just right for wildfires.

"There's a light breeze," said Toms. "And all the dead debris from the Derecho. So it's going to spread like wildfire. No pun intended."

The cause of the fire in Nelson County is still being determined. The fire in Albemarle County was sparked by a downed power line.

"We're getting ready to head back toward my house because it's heading toward my house," said Russell Goines, while the fire was still burning. "I'm going back to get my water hose and get ready."

The residents are praising the work of the volunteer crews who came to protect their homes.

"They work really hard and they don't get any pay at all," said Toms. "I think everyone really appreciates them. At least I do right now."
