A Sunday-morning fire at the Charlottesville Parks and Recreation offices on Water Street has destroyed the building, displacing a number of employees.

Firefighters arrived on the scene Sunday morning and found the building fully involved in flames. The fire began burning through the floors, eventually causing the roof to cave.

“Firefighters got inside and began to aggressively try to attack the fire, but the fire had already progressed at a rapid rate and the integrity of the building was compromised,” says Battalion Chief Rich Jones from the Charlottesville Fire Department.

The Charlottesville Fire Department tackled the blaze through tower operations.

Due to the damage done to the building, the cause of the fire was undetermined. No injuries have been reported.

Charlottesville spokeswoman Miriam Dickler says the employees who worked in the Water Street building will be relocated until further notice.

"We do have some spots in city facilities that we will be able to move them into,” says Dickler. “Where exactly that will be is being determined right now.”

A bulldozer began tearing down parts of the building Sunday afternoon. Fire officials say the Water Street metered parking lot will be inaccessible, and some roads in the area will remain closed for several hours as investigators scour the scene.
